HondenBrokkenMakers (HBM) is an NGO that works solely with donations and does not receive any subsidies or salaries. The main activities are sterilization, feeding of stray dogs and supplying free medical care for animals in need. The Dutch foundation started December 19, 2012 and operates in Topraisar near the Black Sea, in Romania. There she is taking care of over 100 dogs that would otherwise not survive.
HBM sterilizes dogs with and without owners in Topraisar to dramatically reduce the number of stray animals as quickly as possible. Sterilization is professionally performed by local vet clinics who offer a discount price, paid from donations that HBM receives from supporters. Every citizen from Topraisar can have their own dogs and the stray dogs in their area sterilized for free, to avoid breeding of unwanted puppies. HBM therefore has realized a small but efficient clinic at their location in Topraisar to make sure that there is no excuse for any owner to not obey the law. Mother dogs and pups suffer in a terrible way before most of them die as a result of parasites, diseases, traffic, wounds, extreme heat or cold or starvation.
In a few years, at least 70% of the street dogs in Topraisar will no longer exist, if HBM can continue their program of free spaying. Education is key - HBM puts a lot of energy in raising awareness locally.
Their motto 'Doing nothing is not an option!'
